Paula Scher
Paula Scher entered the world of graphic design in the 70's, after a childhood struggle to find a sense of belonging, and an adolescent one to find a place in the art world in particular. She has worked extensively as both a designer and a teacher, and has received numerous awards, including the National Design Award and the Type Directors Club Medal.
I find her work influential because it's so easy to forget that all she's really working with is an arrangement of letters and words. Everything seems much more substantial than that, and you get a new sense of how space can be used. I especially admire her work with maps because of the intricacy and connectedness it expresses, along with the way she works with colour.
